About The Dog Face Team - Meet Stephanie!

Stephanie joined our team in January, 2014

I’m Stephanie, and the only thing I ever remember wanting to do with my life is work with animals.  Like many girls, I wanted to be a vet, so I started at UW Madison, declared a zoology major, signed up for 18 credits and got slammed by a chemistry class with 300 students in it!  Fearing all the math and science in my future, I changed majors and graduated with a BS in Education.  Kids are sort of like little animals, right?

I ended up teaching 4th-6th graders for 23 years!  Early on, I befriended a veteran teacher who was also a dog breeder and showed dogs in confirmation and agility.  I became her shadow, as well as her dog sitter, and attended many shows with her and even helped her deliver puppies.  I was obsessed and read and watched everything dog-related that I could.

Three years ago I found out about Heartland Farm Sanctuary and began volunteering at the barn twice a week.  Eventually I became a very part time staff person and am currently the Programs Director and have resigned my teaching position.  I met Giene when HFS rescued a six-week-old farm piglet and Giene became her (and my) volunteer trainer.  One day, Giene told me she was looking to hire and train another behavior specialist and I thought, ‘Hmmmmm.  Maybe …”

I can’t believe the turn my life has taken in these past two years and I’ve never been happier.  I’m living my dream!

In the other part of my life I’m married and have two kids, one in ninth grade and one in sixth grade. We have Louie, a Standard Poodle, Mike, a cat, Chickpea, a parakeet, and various fish.  I’d also consider most of Heartland’s rescued animals to be my own.

I am very excited to be part of the Dog Face team!
